About the Book
There are no double-exposures in this book. Neither is it a conventional photo essay on New York City. Here you will find no particular subject matter nor stories told, aside from the ones that you, the viewer, might bring to the images.
Ryk Ekedal is a painter and printmaker from New York city and Pete Gardner is a photographer and graphic designer and lives in London.
Together they have walked the streets of NYC on many occasions, taking pictures. This book is a selection from that body of work and though the work itself is not collaborative, they share a common approach: a preoccupation with how the camera can translate three dimensional reality into a unique two dimensional image, with its own intrinsic register of tones, hues and constructs of form.
It is this transmutation that lies at the heart of the images in this book and whilst they are primarily about the individual responses of two photographers to particular spaces and instances of light, hopefully it is also a quietly intimate, albeit oblique, portrait of a great metropolis.
