About the Book
In the face of loss and change our bodies perhaps become ever more eager to connect and feel and be alive. This dichotomy is at the heart of my work, both in images and in words. That the materials of these pieces come from the landscape—birch, basswood, resin, and paper fiber from trees; beeswax from our beloved bees; natural pigments from the stones of our earth—makes the process of creating them intensely poignant.
Each work is comprised of an original photograph printed on archival tissue, floated into beeswax and resin utilizing the encaustic process of painting. Most contain intarsia embellishments (a carving into the wax which allows other colors to be inlaid) paired with original poetry. Some are simply images with small titles. In this way, there is breathing room between the works with words.
