About the Book
We stayed in Whitefish, Montana and drove each day to the entrance in West Glacier, stopping off for espresso and
delicious huckleberry treats to fuel us on the trails. Taking the Going to the Sun Road, we worked our way through Glacier
National Park starting with a gorgeous hike to Avalanche Lake. The first two days would begin and end with a drive past
Lake McDonald, and the chance to hold our hands out the car window to be splashed by the Weeping Wall.
We also took a hike around St. Mary Lake through burned out forest to see St. Mary and Virginia Falls, which included an
up-close encounter with deer and rumors of grizzlies.
The last day, we drove east towards Two Medicine and Many Glacier. We walked along the shores of Upper Two
Medicine Lake and ate lunch outside the Many Glacier Hotel, overlooking Swiftcurrent Lake. We finished our exploration
by taking the Hidden Lake Trail, starting at Logan Pass. On the trail, we hiked across snow in July while avoiding
mosquitoes, spotting several mountain goats and small mammals. We also heard a tale from fellow hikers about narrowly
escaping a grizzly bear! Our bear-spotting happened safely from the car as a little black bear wandered the forest.
