About the Book
This book is a partial survey of southern Saskatchewan's remaining wooden grain elevators. Many of these elevators will be gone or demolished within the next 10 years due to insurance, deferred maintenance or fire. At one time Saskatchewan had over 1,200 country elevators. Today there are less than 200 remaining and the number declines annually. This is a book of black and white photographs of some of these "Prairie Sentinels" that were landmarks on the Saskatchewan horizon and a cultural, social and commercial feature of daily life for many in Saskatchewan. Many towns were known by their elevators and elevator rows. Today these former elevator rows no longer exist in Saskatchewan.
