About the Book
Abuela Raquel was a Centenarian who was a late bloomer - she started painting in her 60s as a way of expressing her appreciation for the beauty of life and sharing some of the many lessons she learned in her 101+ years. This book contains many of her paintings, along with background on how she created them with lessons learned and advice for life in general. Abuela Raquel was born in Santiago, Cuba on December 25, 2014, the fourth of ten children. She followed a long family tradition of teaching - graduating from Teachers College in Havana, and serving as an elementary school teacher in Santiago. She emigrated to the United States in 1946 where she was an accomplished seamstress in New York’s garment district, creating samples for many fashion designers. When she retired in 1964 she returned to one of her early loves, painting. She remained vibrant through her 101, enjoying good conversation, visiting with family and friends, crocheting and a good game of dominos. She attributed her longevity to good food, good wine and appreciation for life – as she has always said “if you have love, you have everything.” We have so much that we can learn from people who have seen so much and live through challenging times. I hope that this book will provide a window into what incredible things people can do when they open their hearts, and allow themselves to create and share the beauty within.
