    About the Book

    Edit

There are many miniature railways in England and Wales, running on gauges from 21 inches to the 5 and 3½ inch gauge tracks popular with the model engineering societies. Most of these railways are run for leisure purposes, but a few provide a useful transport function as well. In this book, the second of two volumes, we look, in photographs, at railways with gauges between 10¼ inches and 3½ inches including the Eastleigh Lakeside, the Great Cockcrow, the Moors Valley and the Wells and Walsingham, as well as many others. Among the railways that are no longer with us, the Dobwalls and the Hilton Valley also feature.

Occasionally, an unrebuilt Bulleid Pacific would appear and, every day, the up and down Cornish Riviera Express would pass by in the hands of the prototype diesel-hydraulics, Active and Ark Royal. Since that time, with only a few short breaks for other interests, railways have been the focal point of my life. At first, the hobby was about taking numbers but quickly progressed to trying to photograph the railway scene. What has proved to be both a fascinating and compelling interest has since taken me all over the world, searching for steam locomotives and old diesels, for which I have equal affection.
