About the Book
A year of stories for school-age children, following Anna Johanek , when she was age 13. Her parents were first-generation Bohemian immigrants who desperately wanted their own farm and were struggling to make a living in sandy, rocky soil. Stories include a dangerous snowstorm, searching for a new calf hidden in the woods, a grass fire started by sparks from a train, and a new dress from the Sears Roebuck catalog. Based on actual recollections of residents living in Komensky Township, Jackson County, Wisconsin in the early 1900s.
