    Anne Steves
    Cumberland, BC, Canada

I am interested in how we learn to belong; somewhere, with someone, in some mindset. In my practice I look at the ways that texts, images and objects can help or hinder us in adapting to new communities, environments or mental states. Through acts of making, I am learning new ways to connect and communicate not only with each other across cultural difference but also with other species and with a constantly shifting landscape. My work often begins with a period of research into local written and material cultures and expands into serial works that can be labour intensive or ephemeral in nature. At the heart of each project lies the question “How might we belong here?” Anne Steves is a Welsh/Canadian multi-disciplinary artist working on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. She received a BFA in Visual Arts from Emily Carr University of Art and Design and an MFA in Studio Practices from the University of Victoria. Her work has been exhibited across Canada and the UK.
