The 'Cragg Vale Coiners' were one of the most notorious, if not the most notorious, of the 'coining' gangs in late 18th century Yorkshire.
Led by 'King' David Hartley, the gang operated in the rugged isolation of Cragg Vale until the authorities became determined to shut down their activities, a decision that had tragic consequences.
This is a recently discovered student study from 1969 which provides a concise introduction to this unique period in the area's history.
