About the Book
Photographs © 2010 by Sarah Doyle,The Last Voices, Vanuatu.
All artwork by the SLG squad of Anambrou in Port Vila, Vanuatu.
This book is a tribute to the Simple Living Ghetto of 2010.
It is a collection of portraits and illustrations portraying youth lives in the challenging urban context of Port Vila. These youth are among the thousands living in town, having migrated from the outer islands in search of opportunities, yet suffering unemployment, underemployment and gross marginalisation.
Simple Living Ghetto (or SLG for short) was created by a group of youth representing a community and using the natagura as a meeting place to welcome, share and live with others. This open space is located next to The Last Voices office in Anambrou - these youth are key ambassadors for the organisation.
The Last Voices (TLV) is a youth-led community organisation that aims to empower youth through music and multimedia activities, and to provide timely and responsible information for positive social and environmental change. TLV strongly believes in creating constructive relationships and sharing information with individuals and organizations to provide the best assistance and opportunities for youth to become active members of society. Therefore, the central aim of our work is to bring together youth groups and movements to foster cooperation, dialogue, networks and collaboration for youth empowerment and development. We share the vision of living in co-existence and harmony with one another and with the earth.
All proceeds from the sale of this book will go towards TLV projects.
