About the Book
Seven islands are explored: the central city, Burano and Murano, favourites with the tourists; two other islands that are part of the central vista from the waterfront of St Mark’s Square, namely, St Giorgio Maggiore and Giudecca; the unusual San Michele which was the main cemetery for Venice, and finally Pellestrina a remote thin sliver of land at the southern edge of the lagoon. Poetry is used to illuminate ideas, emotional conditions or points in time. Photographic images are used alongside poetry to enhance feelings engendered by the pictures and to link these emotions to the human story. Descriptive text is presented to provide context. The aim is to stimulate the viewer’s experience and ultimately to facilitate speculation on imagined people's lives at particular points in space and time.
