About the Book
Having trained as a professional musician and performed for many decades as a concert pianist, Adah Pinchuk Hyman developed her artistic voice in the visual arts starting in her late 60's. A prolific painter whose work has been characterized by distinct themes derived from the natural world, Adah has spent the last few years creating art that captures the varied colors, pulses and vibrant tones of the ever-changing city that has surrounded her for much of her life. This book contains a selected collection of her work from this most recent phase in what has been an inspiring second career as an artist.
When asked about her tendency to periodically select a theme for her paintings and to develop that theme over time, she had this to say:
"I began painting when one of my granddaughters was a baby and I didn't want my music to wake her up. As my hands needed to keep busy, I started to paint. I find painting similar to playing the piano in that there is a form, with motifs and development, theme and variation. I'm drawn to working with motifs, creating something and varying it with or without structure. Like improvising on the piano, painting does not need to strictly follow the rules but can allow for freedom of expression, improvising on the mood. My hand leads me, telling me what to do."
