About the Book
John Hovig’s Impeccable Relic paintings are painted photo-montages of existing art motifs – mash-ups, if you like – tho he prefers to think of them as conceptual collages. The series is a celebration, a re-interpretation, and perhaps an ultimate laying-to-rest of the aesthetic and conceptual ideas in which today’s art world is soaked. Hovig didn’t shy away from whimsy or cliché, but aspired to recombine historical ideas in novel ways, using clear graphical images and strong colors. The specific concepts behind each image are not critical for enjoying each piece. In his words, they were as good a motivation to create decent pictures as any other.
