Moving to New Orleans in 1987, Lankard found a variety of outlets for his photographic style. His personal work has been widely exhibited. “National Dread”, “Chronic Daydreams”, “Selections 20, Five New Orleans Artists”, “The Gun Show”, all received local and national critical praise. He was published in "Louisiana Photographers," a book produced by New Orleans' Contemporary Art Center, and was exhibited in the CAC's show "The Body Photographic" and featured at the CAC in “Absolut New Orleans” for his work commissioned for the Absolut series. He was named “Photographer of the Year” in 2002 by ARTnudes.com. Lankard's unique methods of combining old and new photographic technology in a body of work entitled “The Illuminated Shadow” has been featured in a number of publications. His documentary work was included in the “America Observed” show at The 92nd Street Y in New York.
He co-founded the non-profit New Orleans Photo Alliance.
