About the Book
Incredibly isolated, Easter Island (or Rapa Nui as it is also known by its inhabitants) was eventually found and settled by people from islands further west in Polynesia. The culture that developed on Rapa Nui produced some of the most enigmatic and impressive monuments on the planet.
However, in the last few hundred years, internal conflict and then the impact of contact with the outside world almost resulted in the wiping out of the entire population of the island. Today Rapa Nui has recovered and tourism is on the increase but, ironically, this may pose new dangers for the future of this tiny triangular island.
This book presents an outline of the history of Easter Island illustrated by photographs taken on a visit there between November 28 and December 2, 2006. For the author, visiting Easter Island was the realisation of a lifelong dream.
