About the Book
This book illustrates the full project of ‘The Sweet Proposal: The Cautionary Tale of the Corporate City’. E G. J. Bishop presents the successful academic project which won the Bartlett School of Architecture Medal at UCL in 2018 and was later featured in Dezeen and Wallpaper* Magazine. A satirical cautionary tale of the privatisation of cities, it sees the largest food company in the world convert the historic city of York in the United Kingdom, into a city scaled confectionery factory post its departure from the European Union. As a critique of the privatisation of cities around the world which are taking place in such locations as Sandy Spring’s and Silicon Valley in the USA and the City of Gurgaon, in India. Where the largest corporate infrastructures control our employment, governance, housing and nutrition. This book provides a history of the company town model from its earliest forms in the model village to the privately run cities of today. Providing a service of ethical accountability using architecture as a medium to philosophically question the privatisation of our lives under mega corporations. Which undermine our true freedoms, removing personal control and asks the question, ‘Is the privatisation of cities right for society?’
