About the Book
Tao Yao is a small village a short distance from Jingdezhen, China’s thousand-year-old center of ceramic art. The entire village is devoted to producing large, hand-built storage pots. The photos in this book were taken on a visit in 2004 and were the basis of a book originally sent to one of the village’s residents — the young woman wearing the red shirt and red hat who appears in several of the photos.

Photography is a second career for me, a return to a major interest of mine since childhood. It follows a successful primary career as a packaging designer and design firm executive in Manhattan. My photography seeks to demonstrate what I believe are similarities between photographs and consumer product packaging: both aim to tell a story in a confined space, to maximize the emotional impact on the viewer, to explain and to educate.
