About the Book
'Journeys in African Zion' contains the 2008 and 2009 Duda Chair in Religion Lectures at Concordia College--New York, with photography by the author, a Professor of Religion, Greek, and Humanities. The first section, "Ethiopian Timkat: the Power of Ritual Remembrance," explores the Ethiopian festival of Timkat (the Epiphany, Baptism of Christ), with its unique rites and ceremonies. The second part, '"I will Pay My Vows': the Ethiopian Pilgrimage to Kulubi," elucidates the pilgrimage of 300,000 to the church of St. Gabriel the Archangel, the fulfillment of vows, and the baptism of a thousand infants. The author spent five weeks in Ethiopia researching these topics.
