About the Book
The insignia of the cinquième, or Volume V, which confusingly is actually the sixth instalment of the series that delves deep into the topic of French Foreign Legion insignia. This volume explores the enigmatic cinquième régiment, a regiment whose history is unparalleled in the saga of the Legion. Born in the lush forests and limestone peaks of Tonkin in 1930 (today's North Vietnam), the regiment, following herculean actions against the Japanese in 1945, was destroyed and reduced to a mere shadow of its former self, a simple battalion, which was ultimately dissolved in 1945. It was recreated once more on November 1, 1949, and found itself embroiled again in the forests and mountains of Indochina. Following the end of the Indochina War, the cinquième was soon back in the Legion's ancestral homeland, Algeria, where it was engaged in a fiercely bitter guerrilla war with Algerian rebels from the Front de Libération Nationale. In 1963, the regiment was dissolved and reformed as the 5e RMP (5e Régiment Mixte du Pacifique) and found itself acting as the backbone for France's highly secretive nuclear testing programme in the Pacific. Once again, the regiment was renamed in 1984 as the 5e Régiment Étranger, continuing its work in French Polynesia until 2000, when the regiment was dissolved. Ascending from the ashes once more in 2024, the regiment was reborn by renaming the DLEM the 5e Régiment Étranger, based in Mayotte in the Indian Ocean.
