      About the Book

      Edit

Since 1972, the Zonta Club of Perth has been making a positive difference to the lives of thousands of women in Perth, in Australia and around the world. In the 1970s gender inequality was rife. Women had to give up their Government jobs when they were married, they couldn't get a loan without the signature of a man and careers were stopped before they began because of a chromosome.

Many advances have been made, but they are under threat by the pandemic and climate change. How will the Zonta Club of Perth respond to these threats? Find out by reading this book!

      Perth, Western Australia

I am fascinated with the stories of the people of Western Australia and have helped to produce two books that reflect the state's history. The History of the Zonta Club of Perth captures over 45 years of how the members of the Zonta Club of Perth have said yes to gender equality and no to violence against women. With chapters written by various club members, my role was to bring it all together and the result provides a colourful insight into the workings of an international service organisation. The Stones in My Jar was written by Nerrida Porteous (a member of the Zonta Club of Swan Hills) from the diaries of Samuel Johnson Hayes - State parliamentarian and one of the state's first lawyers, who spent much of his life in Albany. It was my privilege to turn Nerrida’s manuscript into a book so that a wider audience could appreciate the life of this historical figure.
