About the Book
I've made a career of sailing the world's oceans. As a deckhand aboard a variety of boats and ships, I've been able to see a side of life virtually unknown to the landlocked public. My working life has provided me an opportunity to photograph life at sea. It also provided me the financial means to do as I wanted. During periods ashore, I earned a BA in international studies at the University of Washington and a Masters Degree in journalism from the University of Florida. I interned at the Environmental Protection Agency and the US State Department's Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs. I had given up the sailing life, but I longed for the freedom of the sea. The pull is powerful. The unconventional lifestyle sailors often lament provides them a degree of freedom unknown to the world of office work. Sailing makes accessible the most interesting places in the world -- to anyone willing to take the chance.
