About the Book
In this ongoing documentary photography project I explore my own and others’ experiences of, attitudes to and preconceptions about the identity of the English seaside town. I live in Brighton and am drawn to observe retirees, day-trippers and holiday makers from the unique perspective of a full time resident.
The project is a meditation on my understanding of the concepts of work and recreation and how people change their interactions, dress code, body language and eating habits when retired or on holiday.
I wonder if the seaside location is considered a socially acceptable space for guilt-free rest and relaxation and what my attitude and understanding is of the concept of retirement.
How much do people submit to socially constructed stages in their lives such as school, work and retirement, and how much do they accept them as inevitable? How much are people's identities and behaviours modelled by these constructions, and is there a sense of belonging to a group of people with similar experiences and attitudes? Is there an impact from positive and/or negative stereotyping of particular groups in these towns? Are they even aware of it?
