About the Book
This is the story of Clem Craig who flew Grumman Hellcat fighters from light carriers in the South Pacific during World War II. Over two combat cruises, he participated in eight major engagements and flew 31 combat strikes against enemy island installations. Clem became a double ace, shooting down more than 12 enemy aircraft, including five planes in one engagement and four in another. He also assisted in the sinking of a heavy cruiser. Toward the end of his second cruise he was promoted to skipper of the squadron and lead them to shoot down 14 of 18 torpedo bombers attacking his Task Group. For his actions he was awarded 2 Navy Crosses, 1 Silver Star, 8 Distinguished Flying Crosses and 21 Air Medals. He remained in the Navy after the war and Lt. Cmdr Craig led his squadron on a combat tour in Korea in 1951 completing 30 missions against the North Koreans, adding two more Air Medals to his chest.
