About the Book
Imagine your faith like a flame. What kind of flame are you picturing? That answer may change from day to day. Some days we wake up in the morning feeling like a bonfire! We’re burning with the faith in our hearts and we are ready to gather community together around the flame. We are ready to be a source of faith for others, and a source of warmth for those who feel as though their life is cold and dark.
But what about the days that we wake up feeling like a spark? We begin our day feeling like the flame of our faith is barely holding on, desperately fighting all that would snuff it out. It’s ok to have days like that.
But the central question remains the same:
What is the flame of your faith like today?
This sermon series was preached in Lent by Pastor Alex Zuber in the Stony Man Lutheran Parish in Luray, Virginia. Lent is a time when the church declares a season of fasting, prayer, and renewed focus on service as we prepare our hearts for the Paschal Flame, otherwise known as Easter. But this is a strange season. We begin in ashes and work our way toward the bright fire of the Easter Vigil. Many around the church prepare themselves for Baptism at Easter (as the church typically fasts from Baptisms during Lent) where the baptized will hear the words, “Let your light so shine before others that they see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” It is truly a season that leads to the fire of faith, but it begins in Ash, and is a time to focus on repentance and struggle.
