About the Book
At the turn of the twentieth century, Harriet Sophia Phillips decided to leave her Akron family business to travel Europe and paint among the greats. Her dream became a stunning reality, documented in the exhibition at the Myers School of Art’s Emily Davis Gallery. Phillips' collection of more than 200 painting were bequested to the University of Akron’s Department of Art in 1927, and were used in the art department as lesson tools and served as inspiration for the students for decades. As the department moved location countless times, the collection was moved into the University’s archives. These paintings, which detail her travels from Akron to Europe to her final residence in New York City, returned home at the School of Art for this exhibition, as documented in this catalogue..
