About the Book
Rephotography, in the postmodern sense, is the art of appropriation. It is finding an old photograph and rephotographing it in current context. Rephotography is primarily used as a way to examine environmental or urban changes. This rephotographic study, however, examines a more conceptual theme. The book displays rephotographs that represent the transformation of time. The aim is for the viewer to see time’s impact by noticing the diversities or similarities in the rephotographs that show how society has progressed, regressed, or passed untouched. The purpose of the photographs displaying “collision” is to emphasize the similarities across time, yet draw attention to the conflict they possess by overlapping. The book contains photographs, by Nicole Freeman, that transparently overlap photographs by various artists taken over the years, and is accompanied by quotes that add context to the artwork.
