About the Book
The game begins when the caller (called a cantor or singer in Mexico) randomly selects a card from a deck of Loteria cards. The deck is made up of 54 different images (like pictograms), each one on a separate card. The cantor calls out the card’s name or sometimes they use a riddle or a humorous remark instead of reading the card name, again similar to bingo calling. The players with a matching pictogram on their board mark it off with a chip or other kind of marker (many Mexican people traditionally use small rocks, crown corks or pinto beans as markers). The winner is the first player with four chips covering a previously specified pattern, usually either a horizontal, vertical or diagonal row; a squared pattern (four pictures together 2X2); or a picture in each corner of the tabla. The lucky winner shouts out "¡Lotería!" (Lottery!).
My version of La Nueva Loteria is a parody of this game. The cards in my version have pictures that portray a photojournalistic and artistic view of Mexico and its street culture.
About the Creator
Carlos Rosas became fascinated by photography at the age of 13, when his mother gave him his very first camera as a gift. It was a 1950 Kodak Brownie, and Carlos enthusiastically used it to take pictures of local architecture, cars and family get-togethers. As art captivated him and his passion for it grew stronger, he began studying holography in addition to photography and film. When the opportunity presented itself, he attended The Los Angeles School of Photography, where he studied theory and gained more experience. During his time there, Carlos honed his photographic abilities and learned new techniques that he eagerly started using in his own work. Compelled by the potential he saw in his vision of the world; Carlos found unique, photojournalistic ways to show those who viewed his works the extraordinary stories of ordinary things they interacted with on a daily basis, as well as sharing his own personal experiences with others.
