About the Book
I am Tiphaine Rolland, a Graphic Design student working on New Eating Habits option at the School of Design in Nantes, France. This thesis will highlight the main ideas that led my reflection throughout my end of studies project : Table Manners 2.0.
Table manners are customs that include cooking methods, culinary techniques, behaviors and table raising. From Antiquity, we found elements from these habits that have been built on numerous and old origins. Nowadays, France is considered as the country of gastronomy thanks to its cuisine and its table manners. But we can notice that table and its guests individualize themselves since Renaissance because of various reasons brought by new ustensils and distinction between the ranks. Today, individualization continues through contact with information and communication technologies that come on table and also disturb the family daily meal.
In this thesis, I will first study the French table History to discover why it gradually moved from cohesion to individualization from the XVIe century to nowadays. Then I will be interested in the coming of information and communication technologies in our everyday life and I will finish with a last part dedicated to the new ways to be together and consume meals.
