About the Book
Written as a captivating narrative by Kathy Evans, the story of Roy Gill’s life unfolds in vivid detail as he fondly recalls growing up on a small farm in northeastern Nebraska in the early 1900’s.
Enlisting in the Coast Guard before Pearl Harbor, he served on convoy ships in the Atlantic and on LST’s in the Pacific throughout WW2 and rose in rank from seaman apprentice to Commander. The full transcripts of his letters home reveal refreshing first person accounts of harbors and the open ocean during the wartime.
Although raised a Presbyterian, it wasn’t until after his war experiences that he became a born again Christian. For the rest of his life, a strong faith in the redemptive power of Jesus Christ gave his life meaning and indelibly shaped his role as husband, father, and member of his community. At the close of the narrative he expounds on his Christian beliefs and his close relationship to God.
